D'Arcy Kavanagh worked for years as a journalist for newspapers in Alberta and British Columbia before turning to freelance writing. Later, he took to the classroom as a journalism instructor. In 2012, he retired after nearly 40 years working in journalism and decided to combine his love of traveling, cycling and writing to produce mystery novels and travel books.

His first effort was The Bastard is Dead which was followed by A Vintage End, Deception on the Danube and Corsica Born and Dead. The novels feature blogger-columnist and ex-pro cyclist Paul Burke, and are set in Europe, primarily France. Besides plots involving murder, the books have been praised by readers for providing a colourful, realistic portrayal of southern France and the Austrian Danube, and for providing insight into some serious social issues. The national magazine Canadian Cycling even called The Bastard is Dead the "perfect summer read." Pleased with such response, D'Arcy is working on his fourth novel in the series called Corsica Born and Dead.

D'Arcy admits he's learned a number of lessons in writing his Paul Burke novels. First and foremost, he says he no longer discusses how to murder someone when he's in a public place, say a restaurant or while relaxing on a park bench. Another lesson he learned was to test all the food dishes he discusses in his books (foodies will love the novels for that info alone) because he'll get invitations to duplicate a meal at someone's house. He also decided at the outset not to model any characters after friends or family to avoid any potential conflicts. In fact, the only character in the series who has a real counterpart is Burke's dog Plato, who is based on D'Arcy's and Lynda's pooch Peanut.

And if you're wondering if the novels have to be read in sequence, they don't. Each book stands on its own although there are several recurring characters who undergo a variety of changes from book to book.

#4 Corsica Born and Dead - See the YouTube Teaser

Ex-pro cyclist Paul Burke and his partner Hélène Rappaneau are enjoying a working holiday on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. One morning while out on a stroll, Burke sees a group of fishermen huddled on the beach of the village where he’s staying. Curious, he goes over and sees what everyone is looking at – two corpses. But that’s not the only surprise. The bodies are wearing hockey jerseys of the sport’s most famous club, the Montréal Canadiens, Burke’s hometown team. Despite his interest in what happened, Burke leaves the investigating to the local police, and he and Hélène continue onto the port city of Bastia where he will blog about a bicycle trade show – and where they encounter more surprises and more death.

Silenced in Spain Teaser:

Paul Burke has traveled to Spain to report on that country’s version of the Tour de France. It’s a short gig, but he’s looking forward to it, even if he has to share microphone duties with former rival Colin Bothwick. When the two men go for a reconnaissance ride prior to their TV efforts, all is well until Bothwick goes off on his own. That’s the last time Burke sees his old rival alive. The police think it might be an accident, but Burke has his doubts. Soon, though, he finds himself involved in much more than a road fatality.
